Overcoming Mental Programming By Tapping To Your Higher Self
How to break free from the cycles of your programming

I have always been fascinated by the idea that the mind can intentionally be shaped in the direction of our desires and influence our behaviour.
The way we think (our mindset) directly impacts our perception of reality, and we know that perception dictates how we behave and approach situations in life.
What I find intriguing about this particular concept is that it points us to a very interesting possibility, which is that our ability to become whatever we may wish to become at any given time is essentially determined by the program that’s currently running our minds — our paradigm!
Where Does Our Programming Come From?
The mind is programmed through repetitions of mental patterns (neurological pathways) that are created from binary sequences like 0 and 1, like and dislike, good and bad, positive vs. negative, true and false, possible or impossible, wanted vs. unwanted, etc.
These mental patterns find their origin in the impressions (memories) we’ve retained from past experiences, as well as the influence of our environment on our perception of reality.
I find that more often than not, we are the ones standing in our own way because of the unconscious programming that’s running our minds. We perceive reality through the lens of our past traumas, and so, we tend to respond to it inadequately.
Why We Need Programming?
The program that’s running our mind serves as a format or basis for relating to ourselves and the reality of our surroundings.
Through a system of pattern recognition, our programming helps us make sense of the world around us by making it predictable (stable and structured), so we may find the necessary rhythm to operate within it.
Our programming (paradigm) was essentially designed to enhance our capabilities as we navigate through the uncertainties of life, but instead, we have used it to limit our inherent potential.
Reflecting on my journey, there were times when I noticed how my programming was damaging my state of being and no longer serving my best interests. I knew deep within myself that it was time for a change, but since I didn’t know how to go about it, I chose to ignore the call and continue with what was familiar, until things started to get out of hand.
Can you relate?
Getting Through The Limbo Phase of Self-Transformation
Changing aspects of ourselves that we’ve become accustomed to for a long time can be a very uncomfortable process and a struggle even for the best of us.
Is it not strange how the changes we try to implement often feel like we are suffocating ourselves rather than fixing anything?
The reason we experience this discomfort (resistance) is that the programming that was used to comfortably run our minds is now feeling threatened by ‘variations’ that are disturbing its stability.
Your mind works at its best when it is stable and has some certainty about the nature of reality (what it perceives as true). So, it is conveniently bound to resist the unknown.
When faced with the unknown (change), your mind will desperately try to restore certainty by clinging to what it knows and has become comfortable with over many years of repetition.
The Battle Between The Comfortable And The Uncomfortable
Most of us tend to give up the quest for change (self-transformation) at this stage of the process, as the battle between the comfortable and the uncomfortable can become too tough on the mind’s need for stability!
All these aspects of ourselves that the mind desperately seeks to hold onto and not let go are essentially the ones preventing our ‘being’ (life force) from taking on a different program and evolving into a higher state of consciousness (becoming).
The rigidity you’ve developed in your mind through repeated cycles of behaviour is, unfortunately, the reason your consciousness does not have enough room for change, adaptation, and therefore, expansion.
The more you are anchored in your programming, the harder it is to be receptive to change!
Breaking The Cycle By Tapping To Your Inner Self
The key to evolving beyond the cycles of our mental programming lies in our ability to let the intelligence of our inner being take the lead over the mind and influence its programming.
The Being represents your Higher Self
It’s the aspect of your consciousness that is free-flowing (creative) and spontaneous by nature. Your inner being is forever focused on the present moment, so it is always evolving and reinventing itself by the second.
As such, it has this constant desire for novelty and naturally desires to break free from any paradigm that is hindering its evolution (expression) by getting it stuck in a never-ending routine.
The programming is your Lower Self
It’s the part of you that is rigid by nature and only operates within the limits of its conditioning.
Like any other program, this mind only does what it is bound to do and cannot act with spontaneity or freedom of choice (free will) since it has none. Its sole purpose is to provide structure and stability, so it works at its best when sticking to its design and repeating the same pattern until acted upon by some form of disturbance or variation.
‘Letting the being lead the mind and influence your programming is how you end the cycle’
Allowing the being’s intelligence to take precedence over your mind makes room for creativity (flexibility), which naturally balances the rigidity of your programming.
Whereas, letting your programmed mind lead over your being limits your potential to a predetermined pattern of behaviour, thus hindering creativity (authenticity) in favour of stability.
In our endless quest for stability (survival), our inner being always suffers the limits of our mental conditioning, whether we are conscious of it or not.
Beyond The Programming
Beyond the need for survival, however, evolution has made it so that human beings have become the embodiment of the universe’s creative energy in our very design.
Unlike animals, what makes us special as a species is that we have evolved to be conscious of our consciousness. This unique ability to be ‘aware that we are aware’ made it possible for the evolution of our consciousness to also be approached as a rather conscious process.
This means that you can create and recreate yourself consciously (at will) by focusing your mind in the direction of your goals and desires, without having to stay bound to cycles and repetitions, though they are integral parts of the human experience.
Realigning the mind by giving it the role of a servant instead of a master is surely the path to evolving beyond the cycles of your programming and reinventing yourself whenever life requires you to do so!
